Boys Varsity Hockey · Bengals Top Tigers 6-4, Carson nets 2 nd Hat Trick of Season

The Benedictine Bengals topped the Chagrin Falls Tigers 6-4 on Saturday afternoon, December 16 th at the Cleveland
Heights Ice Pavilion. It was another impressive effort by the shorthanded Bengals who again were only able to dress
10 players compared to the 20 in uniform for Chagrin Falls.
The first 10 minutes of the game was a tight checking contest, before junior Mark Tisdale put home a rebound goal
with 4:58 remaining in the period to give the Bengals a 1-0 lead. Mike Wilk and Mike Iammarino assisted on
Tisdale’s 2 nd goal of the season. The Bengals quickly capitalized with Chagrin Falls in the penalty box as Matt
Carson scored on the ensuing power play. It was Carson’s 5 th PPG of the season and team leading 12 th goal overall.
Andrew Schiffer and senior defenseman Ted Houser added the helpers. Before the 1 st period would end, Wilk gave
the Bengals a 3-0 lead with his 6 th goal of the season. Tisdale and freshman defenseman Luke Faulisi provided the
assists. Bengal sophomore goalkeeper Tristan Cotter stopped all 7 Tiger shots in the first period.
Just over 3 minutes into the 2 nd period, the Bengals extended their lead to 4-0 when Carson’s pass sent Schiffer in on
a breakaway. Schiffer made no mistake as he beat the Tiger’s keeper short side, top-shelf from in close. It was
Schiffer’s 6 th goal of the season and Carson’s team leading 9 th assist of the season. The Bengal goal seemed to
awaken the Tiger’s, as they scored 2 goals in less than 2 minutes, the 2 nd coming off of a hard slap shot by the
Tiger’s Joe Conway. Despite the Tiger’s controlling play for most of the remainder of the period, Cotter was able to
keep the Tiger’s off the board and the score remained 4-2 in favor of Benedictine entering the 3 rd period.
Chagrin Falls started the final period strongly and narrowed the gap to 4-3 with a power play goal 3 minutes into the
3 rd period. The rejuvenated Tigers tied the game at 4 all just 2 minutes later and the home team Bengals appeared to
be on the ropes. After 3 minutes of back and forth action, including a few key saves by Cotter, the Bengals showed
their character by regaining the lead when Co-captain Carson ripped a hard slap shot from the top of the right face-
off circle for his 13 th goal of the season. Schiffer tied Carson for the team lead with his 9 th assist of the season on the
goal, with freshman Mike Price notching his 6 th assist of the season. Just over one minute later, Carson completed
his 2 nd hat trick of the season and restored the Bengal lead to 2 goals. Houser picked up his 2 nd assist of the game on
the goal. Despite playing with just 3 defensemen, the Bengals’ defense was able to shut the door over the last 5+
minutes of the game. Senior defenseman Co-captain Henry Jacobs, and defensive partners Houser and Faulisi, stood
strong in front of Cotter, limiting the Tigers to just 7 shots in the 3 rd period. Cotter stopped 18 of 22 shots on the day
in picking up his 5th win of the season.
The Bengals overall record is now 5 wins, 3 losses, while their league record is 2 wins, 1 loss.
Their next game is Sunday night, December 17 th , when they take on the White South Division leading Orange Tigers
in a 6:20pm game at The Pond Arena in Auburn, OH.
