Boys Varsity Hockey · Luke Brown Scores 5 as Bengals Extend Winning Streak with 8-1 Win Over NDCL

Benedictine continued their winning ways last Saturday night, January 20th with a convincing 8-1 win over the NDCL Lions in a White South Division league game at the Cleveland Heights Ice Pavilion. Bengal senior Luke Brown had a career high 5 goals in the game, including a natural hat trick. The win was the 4th in a row for the Bengals and improved their record to 11-9-2 overall and 5-3-0 in league play. The win also clinched the Bengals a spot in the 2018 Barons Cup II post-season tournament which will begin the week of February 5th at the Brooklyn Ice Arena.

The Bengals controlled the opening period, but were unable to solve the NDCL netminder until freshman Mike Price scored his 11th goal of the season with 20 seconds left in the period off a nice assist from Matt Carson. The period ended 1-0 in favor of Benedictine.  Andrew Schiffer extended the Benedictine lead to 2-0 early in the 2nd period when he re-directed a slap shot from senior Ted Houser. Luke Brown scored his first goal of the evening at 5:17 of the period, followed less than a minute later by senior co-captain Henry Jacob’s 2nd goal of the campaign. Both of those goals were unassisted. Brown tallied his 2nd goal late in the second period when he picked up a rebound after Schiffer was stopped on a breakaway. The shorthanded goal gave the Bengals a commanding 5-0 lead after 2 periods.

Brown completed his hat trick when he buried a rebound for a power-play goal at 9:17 of the 3rd period, with Price registering the only assist. Less than a minute later, Brown registered his 4th goal of the evening when he ripped home a wrist shot from the top of the left faceoff circle  to make the score 7-0. The Lions broke Bengal goaltender Tristan Cotter’s shutout at the 6:31 with a powerplay goal off a defensive zone turnover, but Brown restored the 7 goal lead when he flipped home a backhander from the slot. The goal was Brown’s 5th of the game and 14th of the season. Schiffer picked up his 2nd assist of the game and his team leading 25th assist of the season on the play. Cotter picked up his 10th win of the season, while stopping 11 of 12 shots by NDCL in the game.

Benedictine returns to the ice on Saturday, January 27th at 6:300pm when they face the White South Division leading Orange Lions at the Cleveland Heights Ice Pavilion in another league game. The game is senior night and the Bengals will be honoring Luke Brown, Ted Houser, and co-captain Henry Jacobs.
